LANSING--The Natural Resources Commission and DNR Director K. L. Cool have approved the Michigan waterfowl regulations for this fall. The early goose season will again run from September 1-10 in the Upper Peninsula and September 1-15 in the Lower Peninsula. The bag limit is five per day.
A new September 1-10 early goose season will be held in Saginaw, Tuscola and Huron counties, with a two goose daily limit.
A number of state parks and recreation areas have restrictions during the early goose seasons. Contact your local DNR office or the specific state park or recreation area for local information.
Season dates for the regular 2000-2001 goose season and duck season are as follows:
North and Middle Zones:
Youth Waterfowl Hunting Day: Sept. 16
Ducks: Sept. 30-Nov. 28
Canada geese: Sept. 17-Oct.4
South Zone:
Youth Waterfowl Hunting Day: Sept. 16
Ducks: Oct. 7-Dec. 3 and Jan. 6-7
Canada geese outside Goose Management Units: Sept.17 - Oct. 4
Canada geese within Goose Management Units:
Allegan County GMU: Nov. 4-12 and Jan. 6-Jan. 21, 2001
Muskegon Wastewater GMU: Oct. 21-Nov.14
Saginaw County GMU: Oct. 7-Nov. 25
Tuscola/Huron GMU: Oct. 7-Nov. 25
In each zone, the daily duck bag limit is six, and may include no more than four mallards (only one of which may be a female), three scaup, two wood ducks, two redheads, one black duck, one pintail and one canvasback. Hunters also may take a daily bag of five mergansers, only one of which may be a hooded merganser.
The Canada goose daily bag is two during the regular season, except for the Allegan, Saginaw and Tuscola/Huron GMUs, where the daily goose bag is one. The listed opening date at the Muskegon Wastewater GMU may be delayed because hunting is permitted only after crop harvest. Please contact the Muskegon State Game Area office at 231-788-5055 in mid-October for opening date information.
The entire South Zone is open for the late Canada goose season, excluding the Allegan County, Muskegon Wastewater, Saginaw County and Tuscola/Huron GMUs. The season will run from January 6 through February 4, 2001. The daily bag is five geese during the late season.
Hunters should consult the 2000-2001 Michigan Waterfowl Hunting Guide for additional details on waterfowl seasons. The guide contains detailed maps of the boundaries of all zones and GMUs and is expected at license dealers by September 15.
The guide also contains information on how to acquire a free 2000 Michigan Waterfowl Stamp and list of other collectible items available from the Michigan Duck Hunters Association.
On Youth Waterfowl Hunting Day, September 16, young hunters ages 12 through 15 will be permitted to harvest ducks, geese, mergansers, coots, and gallinules. The daily limits for these species will be the same as those permitted in the regular waterfowl season. Hunting hours are listed in the 2000-2001 Michigan Waterfowl Hunting Guide.
Young hunters participating in this special hunt must possess a state small game or junior small game license unless hunting on their parent^s enclosed farmlands where they live. The youths also must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, or a person appointed by their parent or guardian, who is 18 years of age or older, even if they are hunting on their parent^s property. During this hunt, any accompanying adult will act only to guide the youths and ensure a safe hunt. The adult does not need a hunting license and may not hunt or possess a firearm or bow and arrow while afield with a youth who is actively engaged in the youth waterfowl hunt.
