DES MOINES -- Only two weeks remain for hunters to submit 2000 Iowa resident spring turkey license applications, according to John Phoenix of the DNR’s Licensing Bureau. Applications for combination gun/bow licenses, both paid and free must be postmarked no later than Feb. 11. Those applying for archery-only licenses have until March 3. There are paid license quotas in all seasons in zones 1, 2 and 3 (state forest areas). Applicants must select a first choice of zone and season and may, at their discretion, choose to accept a license for season 4 in zone 4 if their first choice is unsuccessful. There are no quotas for paid or free combination gun/bow licenses for any season in zone 4. All valid applications postmarked by the deadline will recieve their first choice of season. If two applications are submitted (two paid or one paid and one free), at least one must be for season 4 in zone 4. Licenses are only valid for the zones in which they are issued; licenses for zones 1, 2 and 3 are no longer valid in zone 4 as they have been in past years. If paid combination gun/bow licenses are still available after the first application period for any season in zone 1, 2 or 3, a second application period will be held March 13-17. Only persons that have not previously applied for a license or were unsuccessful in the drawing and who have applied for no more than one combination gun/bow license (paid or free) for Season 4 in Zone 4 may apply in the re-opened period. Only those licenses still available in Zones 1, 2 and 3 will be sold during the reapplication period. There will be no reopening for any season in Zone 4. During this second application period, licenses will be issued in the order they are received until quotas are filled. Only applications received by the DNR from March 13-17 will be accepted. If all paid licenses for zones with quotas are sold during the first application period, there will be no second application period. If this happens, no free or paid combination gun/bow applications will be accepted after the Feb. 11 deadline. There are four spring turkey seasons and zones in Iowa. Season one is April 10-13; season two, April 14-18; season three, April 19-25; and season four, April 26 - May 14. Resident applications are available at all DNR and county recorder offices, and most license vendors. More information about the 2000 Resident Spring Turkey Application
