At its last meeting in Kingsport, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission (TWRC) set the wild turkey hunting seasons for spring of 2000, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). The 2000 season will run from April 1 through May 9. Due to the increasing populations of wild turkeys in Middle Tennessee, the state has been divided into two management zones, Zone A and Zone B. The statewide bag limit is one bearded turkey per day, not to exceed three per season, except that no more than two turkeys may be taken in Zone A. Zone B: Bedford, Cannon, Cheatham, Coffee, Davidson, Dickson, Franklin, Giles, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Lawrence, Lewis, Lincoln, Macon, Marshall, Maury, Montgomery, Moore, Perry, Robertson, Rutherford, Smith, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, Wayne, Williamson, and Wilson. Zone A: all other counties. On certain Wildlife Management Areas, hunters may take one wild turkey per hunt not to exceed two per year. Turkeys harvested on some Wildlife Management Areas count as statewide birds. Refer to the Wild Turkey Hunting Regulations (available March, 2000) for more details. The total bag limit for statewide and WMAs combined cannot exceed 4 wild turkeys. If a hunter harvests three turkeys in Zone B, he may harvest only one from Wildlife Management Area hunts. The special Youth-Only Hunt day will be May 13, 2000. This hunt is for youth ages 10 through 16 only. Each youth must be accompanied by a non-hunting adult. A regulation remains in effect this year that allows a licensed hunter, who has taken his limit of turkeys, to return without a gun or bow and call for another hunter, except on Wildlife Management Areas where illegal. Calls that mimic the sound of a wild turkey are prohibited again this year on all Wildlife Management Areas from March 1 to the opening day of the season.
