TEXLINE, Texas--All eight hunters selected for the popular public hunt for pronghorn antelope on the Rita Blanca National Grasslands were successful in taking buck antelope, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife public hunting director Herb Kothmann. "Most of the hunting was done during the first three days of the season and many hunters took their antelope on opening morning," said Kothmann. "The hunters reported the antelope taken to be in excellent body condition." Horn length on the harvested antelope ranged from 10 inches up to 14 1/8 inches, according to hunters^ reports. The Rita Blanca antelope hunt is administered through TPW^s special drawing public hunts program, which offers more than 6,000 hunter openings at state parks and wildlife management areas. Through an application process, hunters can designate their favorite game, choose an area of the state they want to hunt and select a hunting method. As many as four hunters can apply as a group for many of the hunts. Application booklets detailing the special drawn hunts are available at TPW wildlife offices statewide in early August each year.
