It^s dry in Nebraska. Many of the Rainwater Basins ion south-central Nebraska are dry this year despite efforts by the Game and Parks Commission and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to pump water into them, farmers are hurrying to get their crops out of the field, and trees are quickly shedding brittle brown leaves. The Game and Parks Commission urges hunters to be very careful in the field to avoid accidentally starting fires. Being careful where they park and being constantly aware of anything that might cause a fire are just more ways in which hunters should show respect for the land on which they hunt. There has already been one incident in which a fire, possibly caused by a carelessly discarded cigaret, caused a fire at a CRP-MAP area in Pawnee County. Steve Riley, Assistant Administrator of the Game and Parks Commission^s Wildlife Division says fire on public and private lands is always a concern, particularly to landowners who have crops and structures that may be destroyed by fire. "Hunters should be very careful with anything that can cause a fire from a cigaret to catalytic converters on their vehicles," he said. "All fires should be put out properly, even small fires can quickly get out of hand."
