Hunting regulations for Biloxi and Pearl River Wildlife Management Areas were amended by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission at the Oct. 7 meeting. The changes, recommended by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to correct oversights in the 1999-2000 hunting regulations approved in July, are as follows: Legal shooting hours at Biloxi WMA will now end at official sunset, the same time as areas outside the WMA, rather than at 2 p.m. as specified in the 1999-2000 hunting regulations pamphlet. In past years, shooting hours for Biloxi WMA have been the same as the surrounding areas. The area is extremely remote and accessible only by boat and prime waterfowl hunting time depends on tidally influenced water levels. Muzzleloader season at Pearl River WMA will now run from Dec. 4 until Dec. 10, instead of Dec. 11 as previously published. The original Dec. 11 closure date would have resulted in an overlap in muzzleloader and modern firearm seasons. The overlap would have created potential enforcement problems because hunters are allowed to shoot deer of either sex with muzzleloaders but not with modern firearms. A declaration of emergency was approved by the commission to effect the change. In accordance with the state Administrative Procedure Act, a declaration of emergency was needed because the standard rulemaking process requires 120 days.
