Following unanimous votes, two commissioners were recently chosen to fill the chairman and vice-chairman slots on the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.
John E. Pechmann, of Fayetteville, was elected chairman, and Wes Seegars, of Goldsboro, was elected vice-chairman.
Upon accepting the symbolic gavel, Pechmann stated that during his chairmanship he would like to see the Wildlife Commission emphasize the upgrade of fish hatcheries, the promotion of quail populations and the construction of a new educational center in Currituck County.
"We do, indeed, have as fine an agency as there is in the state of North Carolina and -- I personally feel -- in the country," said Pechmann, while addressing the Wildlife Commission. "That^s due to all of the hard work you do, and it is certainly due to the fact that we have a staff of over 500 that - to the man and the woman - is the finest wildlife staff in the country."
Pechmann replaces Jim Bennett, who recently completed a two-year term as chairman. Bennett, a Greensboro resident, will remain a wildlife commissioner, representing District 5.
"It^s been a labor of love," said Bennett. "I have always wanted to serve on the Wildlife Commission and have the privilege of serving as chairman. It has helped me grow, and it is something I have really enjoyed doing."
In addition, the following members were recently appointed to serve two-year terms at large on the commission: Charles Bennett, of Matthews; Troy Boyd Sr., of Elizabeth City; and Bobby Purcell, of Cary. They replace former commissioners Joe Long, John Coley and Charles Preston.
