SANTA FE, NM — Young bird hunters are getting several extra opportunities to enjoy New Mexico’s great outdoors once again this fall. Youth Waterfowl Days are being held in both the north and south zones of the Central Flyway, a youth-only light goose hunt is scheduled for Bernardo Waterfowl Management Area and a youth-only pheasant hunt is scheduled on the Seven Rivers Waterfowl Management Area. Youth Waterfowl Days are Oct. 2 in the north zone and Oct. 9 in the south zone of the Central Flyway, east of the Continental Divide. Hunters must be under the age of 16 to participate, and are required to be accompanied by an adult. This year the north and south portions of La Joya Waterfowl Management Area will be open for the Youth Waterfowl Day. The portion of Bernardo Waterfowl Management Area south of US 60 will be open as well. No application is necessary for youth to participate, but hunters must have a valid state license and a federal Harvest Information Program number for New Mexico. The deadline to apply for the youth-only light goose hunt on Bernardo, Y-0-101, is Oct. 9, the same for all light goose hunters to submit applications for any of the hunt packages available for Bernardo or Casa Colorada hunts. Up to three hunters may apply on each application. The bag limit for light geese is 20 a day, with 80 in possession. Hunters must be under 18 on Jan 1, 2000 to be eligible to participate and must pass a waterfowl identification examination prior to hunting the refuge. A federal duck stamp is required if hunters are over the age of 16, and all hunters must have a federal Harvest Information Program number for New Mexico. Applications for the Dec. 11 youth pheasant hunt at Seven Rivers Waterfowl Management Area are due Sept. 11. Hunters must be under the age of 18 and should use hunt code Y-0-102 when they apply. That hunt code was inadvertently omitted from the 1999-2000 Small Game Proclamation. There are up to 40 permits available. The Seven Rivers Waterfowl Management Area is in the southeastern quadrant of the state near Carlsbad. The bag limit is three roosters.
