CHEYENNE -- Hunters hoping for that slim chance to harvest a bison will need to submit an application to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Cheyenne office by 5 p.m. Aug. 31. The drawing establishing a numerical ranking of applicants will be held around Oct. 1. The G&F telephones applicants at the top of the list if more than 15 bull bison enter the North Fork of the Shoshone River Valley or if any cow bison enter the valley. Hunters are alerted that a high number on the list anything but guarantees a phone call. No bison were hunted in the area in 1997 or 1998. G&F officials also believe it is unlikely bison will be hunted in the Jackson area this season. But if litigation blocking bison hunting on the National Elk Refuge is resolved favorably, there is a chance bison hunting could commence there in 2000. There is a $5-nonrefundable fee to enter the priority list drawing. Hunters can apply for either bull or cow bison, but not both. Hunters called to harvest bison will purchase the license when they check-in on location. The licenses are $275 for residents; nonresidents $1,688. The new bison priority list will be in place from Nov. 1, 1999 to Oct. 31, 2000. Bison priority list applications are available at license agents, G&F regional officers or by calling (800) 842-1934 or (307) 777-4600 outside Wyoming.
