LANSING--Michigan^s Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program is offering two "Beyond BOW" workshops this fall for women who have some hunting knowledge, but wish to further their skills or simply share a fun outdoor experience with other women. Preparation For A Deer Hunt, September 17-19, is for the woman who has had some firearms training, and wishes to gain more experience in how to successfully hunt white-tailed deer in Michigan. Participants will learn deer behavior, hunting strategies and how to field dress a deer. The program also includes the ethical challenges faced by deer hunters today and discusses hunting safety. This advanced workshop will be held at Kelsey Lake Lodge, located on 455 acres of rolling hills with a large private lake adjacent to a cedar swamp which serves as a winter deer yard. The lodge is rustic, with a large fireplace, screened porch and comfortable sleeping quarters. Kelsey Lake Lodge is located six miles south of Millersburg in Presque Isle County. The $175 registration fee covers all expenses, including lodging, meals, instruction, equipment and materials. Enrollment is limited, so please contact Virginia Pierce, 248 Hawthorne Ranch Road, Prudenville, MI 48651; e-mail at ecologic@freeway.net. Beyond Bow also is sponsoring a Ladies Pheasant Hunt, scheduled for November 6 and 7, at Marsh Farms Hunting Preserve in Osceola County. This two-day hunt includes the opportunity to hunt over experienced pointing dogs and flushing/retrievers. The program includes a limit of four pheasants per person (two per day), gun handling and safety, clay target shooting, two lunches and hearty hunter’s breakfast. There also will be instruction in game care and handling, including several delicious ways to prepare this premier game bird. Marsh Farms offers a lovely bed and breakfast, and the hunt will take place in prime pheasant habitat west of Clare. Participants will need to possess a valid Michigan small game license. The cost is $100. Information and registration forms are available from Lynn Marla, DNR Office of Information and Education, 517-241-2225; e-mail: marlal@state.mi.us. Registration is limited to eight participants.
