PIERRE – State Game, Fish and Parks officials say there is an apparent misconception regarding the 2001 fishing license requirements for Lake Oahe. Fisheries Administrator Jim Riis said it appears a few people have interpreted the new, inexpensive license for Lake Oahe as an additional charge to fish that water next year. He explains that is untrue. "The reduced fishing licenses for Lake Oahe are not an additional charge for anglers to fish that water," Riis said. "It is simply an additional opportunity for anglers to fish one lake at a reduced cost. Anglers who possess a Lake Oahe fishing license can only fish on Lake Oahe. Anglers who have any other South Dakota fishing license can fish Lake Oahe, or any other public water in South Dakota. Both licenses are not required." Riis noted that the new licenses were created to help attract additional fishing pressure to Lake Oahe. "The intention of the Lake Oahe licenses are to help address the need to increase the harvest of Lake Oahe’s smaller walleye to help the lake’s rainbow smelt population recover," he said. "Therefore, these fishing licenses cost less and are only valid on Lake Oahe." Resident licenses will cost $7. Nonresident licenses will cost $20, and nonresident family licenses will cost $20. These licenses will be valid for the calendar year
