SPOKANE – Children looking to get hooked on fishing can cast their lines Aug. 19 at Riverfront Park. Registrations for ages 5 to 14 will be taken through Aug. 12.
The Kids Klassic is part of a series of fishing events designed to give kids a hands-on fishing experience. For a $5 registration fee, participants will receive a "Kids Klassic" T-shirt and a Zebco rod and reel, which are theirs to keep, or they may bring their own fishing gear and participate in all the activities at no cost.
Veteran anglers from local fishing organizations will be on hand to give kids and their parents tips on fly tying, tackle rigging, water safety, fishing ethics and other subjects. Afterwards, kids will have a chance to test their new skills in the Bassmasters Casting Contest.
Registration forms are available at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Spokane office, 8702 N. Division St., and at other sponsoring agencies. For more information or to register, call 477-2166.
"Fishing is a great family activity that can help young people develop an understanding and appreciation of the outdoors," said Fred Shiosaki of Spokane, an avid fly fisher and member of the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission. "For generations, anglers have been some of the best stewards of our natural resources, and we want that tradition to continue."
WDFW will stock the Spokane River with trout just prior to the event to improve the kids^ chances of success.
The event is sponsored by the WDFW, the C.A.S.T for Kids Foundation, Zebco, Riverfront Park, Gamakatsu, Trout Unlimited, Inland Empire Bass Club, Avista Utilities, Kalispel Tribe of Indians, White^s Outdoors, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Spokane County, PowerBait, 4-H, Washington State B.A.S.S. Federation, Spokane Parks and Recreation Department, Spokane Walleye Club and the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council.
