Kingston, NY .... The New York District of the American BassFishing Club Tournament Trail conducted it^s 3rd qualifying tournament of the year on July 9th, 2000 on the Hudson River, launching at Kingston NY. The tournament winner Gerry Dam fished the back of the creeks using a jig and pig, and a spider jig, weighing in a 5 fish limit that weighed 13.9 lbs. Gerry^s catch was anchored by a 4.33 lb. Largemouth which earned Gerry Lunker honors as well. Eric Pilch took second with 9.99 lbs, Rounding out the top four were: Charles Stuart with 8.80lbs. Rick Schaut with 8.65lbs. The conditions were excellent in the morning, but the seas turned rough in the afternoon due to heavy boat traffic. 13 ABC anglers weighed in 23 fish for a total weight of 46.29 lbs., for an average of just over 2 pounds each. The large majority of the fish including the winning bag and lunker were caught in the backs of the creeks. The NY District of the American Bassfishing Club was happy to assist the New York State Department of Enviornmental Conservation with their HUDSON RIVER ESTUARY BLACK BASS STUDY, being conducted by Lawler, Matusky & Skelly Engineers LLP. The primary objectives of the study are: 1: ESTIMATE THE NUMBER OF BLACK BASS GREATER THAN 11 INCHES IN THE HUDSON RIVER ESTUARY. 2: LOCATE SMALLMOUTH WINTERING AREAS. 3: LOCATE SMALLMOUTH SPAWNING AREAS, AND DETERMINE THEIR IMPORTANCE TO THE FISHERY. 4: DETERMINE THE BALCK BASS EXPLOITATION RATE FROM ANGLERS. 5: DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF REPEATED CATCH/MOVE/RELEASE OF BLACK BASS FROM TOURNAMENT FISHING. After each angler weighed in, the bass were turned over to LMS where they were measured, and recorded, and than released. The fish were checked for tags, ( we had one tagged fish), and a sampling of the catch were tagged before being released alive into the river by LMS. One new members was signed up at the ramp. There were no JR anglers this time around. The American BassFishing Club Tournament Trail consists of over 150 Tournaments in 15 States that culminates in a National Championship the following spring.
