Several Minnesota lakes and streams will be closed to fishing when the angling season gets underway on May 13. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said that the early ice-out on Minnesota lakes this spring means that walleye will be done spawning throughout most of the state. However, some fishing closures are needed for the beginning of the 2000 fishing season to protect walleye that are still concentrated in spawning areas.
The following closures in Cook County have been in effect since April 1: • Sea Gull River from Sea Gull Lake through Gull Lake to Saganaga Lake approximately one-third mile north of the narrows is closed to fishing through May 26. • Saganaga Falls on the Minnesota-Ontario border where the Granite River enters Saganaga Lake is closed to fishing through May 31. • Maligne River (also known as Northern Light Rapids) on the Ontario side of Saganaga Lake is closed to fishing through May 31. • The channel between Little Gunflint Lake and Little North Lake on the Minnesota-Ontario border is closed to fishing through May 31. • Cross River (inlet to Gunflint Lake) from the Gunflint Trail to Gunflint Lake is closed to fishing through May 26.
Closures on Minnesota-Ontario border waters are made in cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and affect both sides of the border. Other closures include: • Gull River in the city of East Gull Lake, Cass County, from the Army Corps of Engineers Dam on Gull Lake to approximately 250 feet downstream, will be closed to fishing through May 26. • Inlet area of Little Birch Lake, Todd County, has been closed to fishing and boating since April 1 and will remain closed through May 26. The posted area begins downstream of the fish barrier on Angler Drive.
Boat travel is permitted through the closed areas, except on Little Birch Lake, where the closure applies to both fishing and boating. All closed areas will be posted.
